Fallacy of composition


The fallacy of composition is a logical fallacy whereby the arguer uses some quality of a part and applies it to the whole. In other words, the fallacy is based on inferring what is known about individual parts and applying it to the whole.

It is based on confusion between what is true of the part and what is true of the whole.

Example of the fallacy of composition

Human cells are invisible to the naked eye.
Humans are made up of human cells.
Therefore, humans are invisible to the naked eye.
