On 30 January 2021, anti-vaccine protestors shut down mass COVID-19 vaccinations at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. About 50 protestors blocked access to the stadium which kept people who had been waiting for hours to get vaccinated against the diseases.

I know that some of you out there think we should treat these anti-vaccine lunatics with respect and professionalism. Why?

These people are vile, ignorant, hateful, narcissistic liars who have no concerns for the lives of other human beings. If these morons want to deny the settled science on the safety and effectiveness of vaccines, they can join with flat-earthers and other conspiracy idiots to share their backward beliefs with one another. They don’t have to stop others, who are rational and accept the science of actually trained people, from getting the vaccine.

I’m tired of these anti-vaccine clowns, but the blocking of mass COVID-19 vaccinations in Los Angeles is a step too far. There is no further need to pretend that these people are “misguided,” they are a clear and present danger to our citizens.

Los Angeles COVID-19 vaccinations

The Los Angeles Times article describes what happened:

Dodger Stadium’s mass COVID-19 vaccination site was temporarily shut down Saturday afternoon when about 50 protesters gathered at the entrance, frustrating hundreds of motorists who had been waiting in line for hours.

The Los Angeles Fire Department closed the entrance to the stadium — one of the largest vaccination sites in the country — for about an hour starting just before 2 p.m. as a precaution, officials said. Several LAPD officers also responded to the scene; a spokeswoman for the department said no arrests were made.

Andrea Garcia, a spokeswoman for Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, said that despite the 55-minute interruption, no appointments were canceled.

“We remain committed to vaccinating Angelenos as quickly and safely as possible,” she said.

Typical of the tactics of the lunatic fringe over the past few months, this protest was organized on social media.

A post on social media described the demonstration as the “Scamdemic Protest/March.” It advised participants to “please refrain from wearing Trump/MAGA attire as we want our statement to resonate with the sheeple. No flags but informational signs only.

“This is a sharing information protest and march against everything COVID, Vaccine, PCR Tests, Lockdowns, Masks, Fauci, Gates, Newsom, China, digital tracking, etc.”

live-streamed video of the gathering shows a group of protesters on a sidewalk as cars navigate cone-lined lanes toward the stadium, which served as a COVID-19 testing site for months. A Times photographer witnessed much of the incident.

Protesters carried signs that read “Save Your Soul TURN BACK NOW,” “CNN IS LYING TO YOU,” “RECALL GAVIN NEWSOM” and “TAKE OFF YOUR MASK.” Some handed out pamphlets to motorists who had their windows down. Some cars blared their horns as they drove by.

This post was widely shared on Facebook:

Apparently, these anti-vaccine nutjobs believe in all of the myths about COVID-19 and the vaccines for the disease. Of course, there is a massive overlap between these anti-vaccine screwballs and the right-wing Trump world.

Once again, they are a clear and present danger to America because they are doing everything they can to have more and more people die of the disease.

Dr. Richard Pan responds

California Democratic State Senator Richard Pan, MD, who helped pass laws that mandated vaccinations for school-aged children, responded to this immoral protest:

As COVID is now the leading cause of death among Americans and vaccines hold the promise of stopping the pandemic, we should be outraged that unmasked anti-vaccine extremists obstructed entry into the America’s largest vaccination site, Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, today as they screamed epithets at the seniors and health care workers waiting in their cars to get the COVID vaccine.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated event of violence by these extremists. In 2019, incited by their violent rhetoric, an anti-vaxxer assaulted me on a street while live-streaming the attack on Facebook and another threw blood from the public gallery striking several California Senators on the floor, halting the people’s business. Just this month, anti-vaccine extremists threatened California Senators with gun violence during public comment at a budget hearing and some of the stadium protestors have been identified as participating in the assault on the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

The attack on people waiting for their COVID vaccine disproves their false protestations about their rights and freedom. These extremists tried to deny other people their choice to get the vaccine and they want to take away our freedom from this terrible pandemic. The fact that over 430,000 Americans have died of COVID is not enough for them as they oppose every effort to slow the disease: masks, testing, physical distancing and vaccines. And they again showed they will use violence to stop anyone from protecting themselves and their loved ones from this terrible disease.

Our schools, economy, state and country cannot be held hostage by a privileged minority who do not have facts supporting them and who resort to intimidation and violence to impose dangerous, false beliefs that endanger us all. Our Presidents have repeatedly said that America does not negotiate with terrorists, and that must include domestic terrorists. These extremists have not yet been held accountable, so they continue to escalate violence against the body public. We must now summon the political will to demand that domestic terrorists must face consequences for their words and actions. Our democracy and our lives depend on it. (emphasis added)

Yes, they are anti-vaccine terrorists

I agree with Dr. Pan – these people are domestic terrorists who reject facts about these vaccines to block the mass COVID-19 vaccinations in Los Angeles. They are privileged. They are ignorant. And they should be arrested and face consequences for their actions.

Well over 440,000 Americans have died of the disease (updated accurate counts) – these vaccines will not only prevent the deadly disease, but it will help us get back to some semblance of normal.

I have called these people anti-vaccine terrorists before. Katie Joy wrote in Without a Crystal Ball on Patheos:

Fringe conspiracy-theorist terrorists, called ‘anti-vaxxers’ are multiplying so fast that some counties, cities, and states have vaccination rates below community or ‘herd’ immunity levels across the U.S. With more parents buying into the  conspiracy that vaccines contain toxins, cause autism, and are unsafe, children, the elderly, and immunocompromised are suffering. These people need to be called out for what they are; anti-vaxxers are terrorists that kill and harm our children.

Even if you oppose anti-vaxxers, you might think it’s too extreme to use the “terrorist” label in this case. I do not. Though there is no single agreed-upon definition of terrorism, most agree that it consists of using fear as a tool to achieve political or social change while disregarding harm done to others in the process. I think anti-vaxxers meet every part of that definition.

These anti-vaccine terrorists have done everything they can to block vaccines that save hundreds of thousands of lives just in the USA every single year. Now, we have a pandemic that is killing over 3000 people a day, and these entitled, privileged, facts-ignorant mobs want to stop COVID-19 vaccinations. They are evil. They are hate-filled. And they are sociopaths.

We should brook no quarter for the anti-vaccine terrorists. I know some of you think that we should engage them with civil conversation, but they think that their ignorant opinions are equivalent to facts.

As Sam Harris once wrote:

Water is two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen.

What if someone says, “Well, that’s not how I choose to think about water.”?

All we can do is appeal to scientific values. And if he doesn’t share those values, the conversation is over. If someone doesn’t value evidence, what evidence are you going to provide to prove they should value it? If someone doesn’t value logic, what logical argument could you provide to show the importance of logic?

Los Angeles is considering laws against those who refuse to wear face masks, maybe it should be extended to these privileged terrorists. Sure, they have First Amendment rights to protest vaccines, they can do that all day long if they want. They don’t have the right to block people from the life-saving vaccines.

These people should have been arrested and spent time in the Twin Towers Correctional Facility. That’ll teach these terrorists how far their privilege will go.
