Of course, you might already be seeing outlandish claims from anti-vaxxers and COVID deniers about this paper. Still, their conclusions are based on fallacious data and analysis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If some researchers were able to demonstrate a correlation between mRNA-based COVID vaccines and cancer using actual medical records and then published it in a respected medical journal, I&#8217;d take notice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These researchers used pointless VAERS data (here we go again) and published it online, not even in a journal. To be fair, if a researcher has critical data regarding vaccines and cancer, they would publish it in a respected English-language journal. In case you&#8217;re wondering, many researchers whose first language is not English frequently, if not exclusively, publish in English-language medical journals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This post will attempt to decipher what the Russian researchers are claiming and then critique their claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"731\" height=\"1300\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.skepticalraptor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/pexels-photo-5878504.jpeg?resize=731%2C1300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"covid mRNA vaccines cancer\" class=\"wp-image-27994\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.skepticalraptor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/pexels-photo-5878504.jpeg?w=731&amp;ssl=1 731w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.skepticalraptor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/pexels-photo-5878504.jpeg?resize=135%2C240&amp;ssl=1 135w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.skepticalraptor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/pexels-photo-5878504.jpeg?resize=270%2C480&amp;ssl=1 270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 731px) 100vw, 731px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by Artem Podrez on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pexels.com\/photo\/a-close-up-view-of-a-covid-19-vaccine-vial-on-blue-background-5878504\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pexels.com<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">mRNA-based COVID vaccines and cancer research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a paper <a href=\"https:\/\/elib.usma.ru\/bitstream\/usma\/24411\/1\/USMU_Sbornik_statei_2025_329.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published<\/a> online, Angelina A Seliverstova and Oleg G Makeev, MD, Professor, Department of Biology and Biotechnology, Ural State Medical University, Yekaterinburg, Russia, hypothesized that mRNA-based COVID vaccines were linked to increased rates of cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers used data from the CDC&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/vaers.hhs.gov\/\">Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System<\/a> (VAERS), not from patient records or from databases that use electronic health record data from member sites, to assess vaccine safety and detect adverse events in near-real time, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccine-safety-systems\/vsd\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vaccine Safety Datalink<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers claim that their data suggest ovarian cancer risk rose dramatically post-COVID vaccination, according to VAERS data. As I have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skepticalraptor.com\/skepticalraptorblog.php\/vaers-does-not-show-causation-between-vaccines-and-adverse-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">written before<\/a>, VAERS is a dumpster fire of information. No reports within the database have been shown to actually link to adverse events \u2014 it relies upon self-reporting, not scientific links. Using VAERS to try to show a correlation between mRNA-based COVID vaccines and cancer is the lazy person&#8217;s method of medical research. There are better databases (such as VSD), but that takes real scientific analytical skills. Finally, VAERS reports are unverified and frequently incomplete.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Even if the researchers could show correlation, and it&#8217;s clear that they didn&#8217;t, they have not established <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skepticalraptor.com\/skepticalraptorblog.php\/biological-plausibility-determining-causation-in-vaccine-adverse-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">causation<\/a> between vaccines and cancer. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There were no controlled comparisons between COVID-vaccinated and -unvaccinated cohorts. These types of studies would eliminate coincidental increases in cancer that were unrelated to COVID vaccination.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The study completely ignored numerous studies that have not shown any increase in cancer rates.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers present evidence that relies heavily on unsupported correlation, adverse-event reports, and speculative mechanisms rather than controlled, reproducible data.\u00a0If the researchers had done a cohort study that relied upon better databases that link to actual medical records, they could have presented a strong study that would require researchers to examine if there are links between cancer and mRNA-based COVID vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this is an awful study that wasn&#8217;t published in a peer-reviewed journal. To be honest, it&#8217;s like studies that anti-vaxxers love to publish to &#8220;prove&#8221; some weird link between vaccines and adverse events. It&#8217;s barely science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although anti-vaxxers are going to run around claiming that COVID mRNA vaccines are causing cancer, they don&#8217;t have anything.
